On Friday, Akash Deep joined the ranks as India’s 313th Test player, receiving his debut cap before the fourth match against England in Ranchi. The 27-year-old fast bowler steps in for Jasprit Bumrah, who has been rested to manage his workload. Captain Rohit Sharma has made this sole change to India’s playing XI for the match. Originating from Sasaram in Bihar, Akash Deep harbored a deep passion for cricket, a pursuit initially discouraged by his father. Undeterred, Akash ventured to Durgapur under the guise of job hunting. Fortunately, he found support from one of his uncles, enabling him to pursue his cricketing dreams against the odds.

Akash Deep’s journey took a promising turn when he joined a local academy, earning acclaim for his impressive pace. However, tragedy struck as his father suffered a stroke and passed away. Compounding the grief, two months later, Akash also lost his older brother. Despite these setbacks, Akash’s resilience and commitment to his cricketing aspirations persisted.

Facing a significant family crisis after the loss of his father and brother, Akash Deep confronted financial hardship, compelling him to halt his cricket pursuits for three years. During this period, he prioritized supporting his mother by working to make ends meet. Despite attempting to redirect his life, Akash’s passion for cricket proved irresistible, drawing him back to the game after a brief hiatus.

Upon his return to Durgapur, Akash Deep later transitioned to Kolkata, where he initially settled in a modest rented room with his cousin. This marked a new chapter in his journey, as he continued to pursue his cricketing ambitions in the bustling city.

Akash Deep’s cricketing journey progressed as he became a part of the Bengal Under-23 team, making his debut in 2019. His skills and performances caught the attention of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore, who signed him ahead of the 2022 season, marking a significant milestone in his career.

As of February 23, 2024, Akash Deep joined the ranks as the 313th player to don the Test cap for India in cricket.
