Kapil Dev, who ranked No. 2 on the retrospective table in 1979–80, had previously held the highest position by any Indian pacer. In October and November of 2010, in addition to Bumrah, Zaheer Khan also held the third position.
Bumrah’s ascent comes after he finished with a match total of 9 for 91 in the second Test match in Visakhapatnam against England. In that match, India pulled even in the series with a victory. He took his tenth five-for in just his 34th Test match, and he concluded that match as the fastest Indian to 150 Test wickets. Six of those wickets came in the opening innings.
