Highlights of IND vs ENG Day-1: England Batting
England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bat first in Hyderabad. Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley, the openers, were aggressive from the start, smashing Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah all over the field in the opening ten overs. But after the spinners entered the contest, India stormed ahead. Duckett was removed by Ravichandran Ashwin in the twelfth over, drawing the first blood. After that, Jadeja took Ollie Pope’s wicket, which allowed Joe Root to enter. On the second ball that Root faced off Jadeja, he had a near miss as India attempted in vain to overturn a rejected LBW claim. Soon after Crawley’s fall.
Root and Bairstow steadied the ship as it headed into England. The two scored 61 off 105 balls, but as soon as play in the second session resumed, they were both sent back. With two more wickets added, India took the lead, and Jasprit Bumrah joined in on what has been the spinners’ day off for the most part. When England were down to their final two wickets, captain Ben Stokes changed tactics and he and debutant Tom Hartley enjoyed a valuable 38-run partnership for the eighth wicket.
At tea, he had Mark Wood at the other end, and England were 215/8. With a six off the next ball, Stokes reached his half-century mark. But shortly after play resumed, Wood went down, which put No. 10 Jack Leach in the middle. After collecting as many strikes as he could off Bumrah, Stokes was unplayable on 70 off 88. As a result, England was out for 246 runs.
