Alexander Zverev secures a spot in the Australian Open semifinals with a victory over Carlos Alcaraz

During the initial years of his budding career, Carlos Alcaraz has demonstrated a penchant for turning the nearly impossible into a routine. His consistent high-level performances, rapid learning from mistakes, and the ability to navigate through challenges, even during moments of struggle, define the resilience and adaptability that mark his journey.

This time around, despite a spirited comeback in the final moments, the second seed faced a daunting challenge due to a lackluster start against Alexander Zverev. Zverev sustained a high level of play throughout four sets and managed to secure a hard-fought victory in the fourth set, ultimately winning 6-1, 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-4. This triumph propelled Zverev into the semi-final of the Australian Open.

Consequently, the upcoming clash for a coveted spot in the final will feature the sixth seed, Alexander Zverev, and the third seed, Daniil Medvedev, this Sunday. In a preceding match, Medvedev showcased remarkable composure in challenging heat conditions, fending off a determined Hubert Hurkacz with a 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 victory to secure his place in the Melbourne semi-finals.

Entering Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday night, Alcaraz was expected to dominate his lower-ranked opponent. However, their past encounters highlighted the potential threat. Zverev maintained a narrow 4-3 lead in their head-to-head record, featuring a memorable victory at the 2022 French Open, which stands out as one of the best matches in his career against the talented Spaniard.

It became evident early on that Zverev was in a determined and aggressive mindset, swinging freely and dictating the pace of the match. On the contrary, Alcaraz seemed shaky right from the start. The tone was set as he promptly conceded the first break to love, delivering a dire and error-laden opening service game.

In the initial two sets, Zverev showcased strong serving, adept scrambling from behind the baseline, and a strategic approach, luring errors through his defensive play. He judiciously seized opportunities to move inside the baseline and launch attacks. In contrast, Alcaraz struggled to control his error count, concluding the first set with just two winners but a staggering 10 unforced errors. Despite showing signs of finding his rhythm early in the second set, Alcaraz faced a swift downturn, with unforced errors accumulating once more.

In his final push, with Zverev serving for the match at 5-3, Alcaraz summoned a moment of brilliance. Displaying an exceptional return game, he closed down the net to secure a crucial break, igniting the crowd. His aggressive and versatile all-court game continued to shine through an irresistible tie-break, forcing the match into a fourth set.

The momentum had unmistakably shifted, and Alcaraz dominated much of the fourth set, consistently pressuring Zverev. Despite facing immense pressure, Zverev maintained exceptional service, matching Alcaraz in the frantic cat-and-mouse rallies initiated by the Spaniard. Zverev persevered long enough for Alcaraz’s level to dip, ultimately securing a dramatic victory.

Carlos Alcaraz

“With the level that I was playing before, coming into this match with a lot of confidence, knowing that I’m playing good tennis, it’s a shame that I started the match like the way that I did and ending the way that I did. But it’s tennis,”.

Meanwhile, Zverev persists in competing and securing victories despite grappling with serious charges. The Berlin criminal courts disclosed on the eve of his first-round match at the Australian Open that Zverev is set to undergo a public trial starting on May 31. He faces charges of physically abusing his former girlfriend, Brenda Patea, and causing harm to her health. Notably, the trial’s schedule poses potential conflicts with both the French Open and Wimbledon. Zverev has consistently denied the charges.

Medvedev secures Australian Open semi-final berth after defeating Hubert Hurkacz

In the initial men’s quarter-final of the day, Medvedev appeared to be cruising towards a convincing four-set victory over Hurkacz, securing a break in the fourth set. However, Hurkacz displayed resilience by digging deep, reclaiming the break, and ultimately forcing the match into a fifth set. Despite Medvedev facing challenges in the heat as the match extended, he managed to find a way through.

In an eventful 11 days, Medvedev navigated through grueling five-set encounters, sweltering conditions, and even a match that extended until 3:40 am. Reflecting on his physical toll, Medvedev mentioned, “After every match I’m in the locker room destroyed.” However, he credited the recovery efforts, saying, “But then we do a good job. One day off is probably enough to feel good the next day. So far, so good in the beginning of the matches, and that’s what matters.”
