History
Shivaji Maharaj, originally named Shivaji Bhosale, belonged to the Bhonsle Maratha clan and was born at Shivneri Fort on the Marathi Shalivahana calendar, specifically on Falgun’s Krishna Paksha 3 in the year 1630. Renowned as one of the greatest Maratha rulers, he played a pivotal role in establishing the Maratha Empire by carving out a region from the Adilshahi Sultanate of Bijapur. This marked the significant inception of the Maratha Empire.
At the age of 16, Shivaji Maharaj demonstrated remarkable military prowess by capturing the Torna fort, as recorded in historical accounts. Subsequently, he seized the Raigad and Kondana forts a year later. Shivaji Maharaj is also credited with re-establishing Hindavi Swarajya, a term reflecting self-rule or self-governance in the local language.
Significance
The inaugural celebrations of this festival were initiated by the Maratha ruler Mahatma Phule in 1870 in Pune. Subsequently, Bal Gangadhar Tilak played a crucial role in advancing these celebrations. As a prominent freedom fighter, Tilak brought the significant contributions of Shivaji Maharaj to the forefront, influencing people by emphasizing and promoting his image.
